"Galloping Gourmet: Dining with Buffalo Bill" presented by Steve Friesen
This lecture explores a little known aspect of Buffalo Bill and his life. He wasn't just a buffalo hunter, scout, and showman...he was also a gourmet. He was as comfortable eating in Delmonico's in New York City as dining on wild game around a campfire. It all began with his first gourmet meal while guiding a celebrity buffalo hunt. Once he started his show business career, he ate at some of the best hotels in the country. Later he ensured that the food provided to his Wild West show performers was as good as any at the best restaurants in America. Then, when the Wild West traveled through Europe, he hosted everyone from Thomas Edison to kings, queens and princes for meals before and after the shows. He also introduced several food innovations, including opening the first Mexican restaurant east of the Mississippi. Since this presentation will be at the December meeting, several Christmas stories about dining with Buffalo Bill will be included as well.
Steve Friesen has presented to the Denver Posse of Westerners several times on Buffalo Bill and other subjects. He is also a past sheriff of the Posse and received a lifetime achievement award from the Posse. Before retiring in 2017, he spent 22 years as director of the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave, capping a 44 year career in the museum field. He is the author of four books, including Galloping Gourmet: Dining with Buffalo Bill, published by the University of Nebraska Press in 2023. He will be selling and signing copies of that book at the December Posse meeting.
