July 26th Posse Meeting

"The Heart of Colorado: Symbolism at the Statehouse"

by Derek R. Everett, MSU-Denver/CSU

There's no more symbolically powerful place in Colorado that the state capitol, the place where we gather to protest and celebrate, to legislate and mourn, to explore what it means to be a Coloradan.  Join Derek R. Everett, who has conducted research and given tours at the capitol since 1997, and is working on his second book about the building, to consider the ways in which a pile of granite, marble, iron, and gold on a ridge in Denver is imbued with incredible significance.  The stories that unfold at the capitol shape our state's identity, and the ways in which we interpret Colorado's past under the dome makes compelling statements about priorities and principles in the Centennial State.

Derek R. Everett is a member of the history departments at MSU-Denver and Colorado State University.  Born and raised in the Denver area, he earned degrees at Western State College of Colorado and Colorado State University before completing a doctorate in history at the University of Arkansas.  Everett is the author of three books—The Colorado State Capitol (2005), Creating the American West (2014), and Colorado Day by Day (2020).
